This month sees my first double cd set. I’ve Got You Covered was a concept that had long been in the back of my mind. In fact one of my earliest homemade CDs was called that, and contained nothing but covers. Over the past year or so, I have been collecting the odd cover tune – occasionally using them on other CDs – in the hope that I would finally issue out a disc of covers…
Then in the late fall of 2005, I heard a cover of the Kaiser Chief’s “I Predict a Riot” by the Cheshire Chord Company (a choral ensemble.) I had not yet put out a disc with the original on it, and I really wanted to put out this fantastic cover version as well. So the seed was planted to do a disc. This time around I decided to not only present a selection of cover songs, but also the original version as well….
While having the cover and it’s original presented together seems like a nice idea, it does make for a rather repetitive disc. With this in mind, I realized that I needed to do my first double-disc release. This way you – the listener – can pop a disc in your player and hear eighty-minutes of completely different songs. But being the kind of person that I am, I couldn’t just do a disc of covers and a mirror disc of the originals – no…
The discs alternate cover-original-cover-original (or the other way around.) This proved a little more challenging, but worth the effort (even though the first burn through had a mix up beginning with the seventh track, and the discovery that I had two covers of one song…) And, by chance, disc one ends with a cover and disc two begins with an original – so if you play them back to back, the alternating continues…
